Measuring Up, Personal Worth, And Personal Value

Part 2 Of 3

Romans 3:21 But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, I through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished—26 he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. (NIV)

Your Personal Worth

What are you worth?

Are you worth enough to be redeemed?

In God's eyes, you are not despicable. You are not worthless scum.

Christ has always seen the beauty underneath our surface coat of garbage. Many people grow up thinking and believing they are not worth much. People of all ages, especially kids, can be cruel and say cruel things to each other. Many people are born to parents they didn't choose and parents who don't love them in any appropriate way. People are born into problems of all kinds. People are born into brutal circumstances. People tell other people they aren't worth much. People feel inferior about the way they look.

Feelings of inferiority and worthlessness are like a plague upon our society.
People feel they are ---
Too tall
Too short
Too fat
Too thin
Too old
Too young
Too rich
Too poor
Too pretty or too handsome
Not pretty enough or not handsome enough
Not educated enough
Not talented enough

People lose their jobs, and because their jobs are so important in their life, people end up thinking they are not worth much.

There are many reasons why people believe they are not worth much. Many of these reasons for feeling worthless (like the ones listed above) are false.

Inferiority Feelings

People are racked with inferiority feelings.
It makes no difference where these inferiority feelings came from, the inferiority feelings are real.

Most of the time inferiority feelings are without any foundation. People often feel inferior when there is no reason to feel inferior.

Persons who feel they do not measure up, or who feel worthless, sometimes try to take their life. The result of feelings of worthlessness and inferiority can create problems for which there is no easy cure. Many times people don't want to admit they are wrong, even about feelings of not measuring up.

There is no issue confronting more people of every age than the issue feelings of inferiority or not measuring up. When you go to school you worry about measuring up to other kids in all kinds of ways. You worry about not being accepted by a group. No one wants to be isolated or left an outsider. You worry about measuring up to the standards of the teacher, parents, friends, and family. When we get older and start working we try to measure up to an employer's expectations. In addition, when you go to church you are often told, in so many words, you don't measure up there either. With all this talk of not measuring up, it is no wonder people feel incredibly inferior, or they rebel and say they don't care whether they measure up.

You Are Worth Something

The facts are…you are worth something.

You are worth more than "something." You are worth more than all the treasure on earth. You are worth more than all the gold and silver all of humanity could ever collect.

In Christ eyes, He can see past the inferiority garbage you carry around. He can see past mistakes making you feel inferior. He can see past the faulty thinking and faulty logic you carry around.

The image many people have of themselves is pretty poor. The image many people have of God is pretty poor. The image many people have of themselves and God together is pretty poor.

The essential question is: How does God see you? What does God see when He looks at you? Does He see a dirty, rotten, evil, deformed, distorted, no-count, bunch of totally worthless flesh that should be totally abandoned and ignored? Or does He see an artwork needing restoration and redemption?

You Are Worth More Than Something

We are works of art to God. God made us. God does see us as fallen, broken, isolated, alone, weak and sometimes pretty dumb. Compared to God, we might be totally helpless, but there are some things we can do here on earth. In God's eyes, He can see both our potential and our problems. God is not blind to what we can be any more than He is blind to whom and what we are. God is more interested in what you can become than He is in your past. God is more interested in what you can be this afternoon, and tomorrow than He is interested in your yesterdays. God wants to look past your personal history. God wants to restore you. God wants to make you into a new person. God's problem is…He can't make you into a new person without your consent. Christ was willing to go to the cross so you, by your choice, could be made new.

Christ Sees Each Of Us As Redeemable

Christ sees each of us as redeemable. Whether we get redeemed is determined by our decision to accept Christ who loves us. We determine whether we get cleaned up enough to stand before God.

Kids have a way of getting dirty. Partly because they are lower to the ground. Mostly, kids just get dirty because they don't care if they stay clean or not. Dirt is nothing to a 3 year old. Sometimes not even to a 6-year-old. Sometimes even a 6-year-old will go out in the yard and get dirty "playing pig." Children don't have enough experience when they are younger to understand what "clean" really means. If you tell a 2-year-old to go get cleaned up, the kid will throw a rubber duck in the bath tub and think that's it. A 2-year-old is not capable of really cleaning up.

The problem each of us has is we cannot clean ourselves up enough to be godly. We are still children to God. And sometimes we play pig. Unfortunately, playing pig in real life has grim circumstances. In a spiritual sense, we cannot really clean ourselves up or redeem ourselves. We cannot make ourselves new.

Worthy Enough To Be Redeemed

Many people cannot see themselves as worthy enough to be redeemed. It is important we see in ourselves as redeemable. Because when we accept Christ as our Savior, if we do not begin to see ourselves as He sees us, that is, as redeemable, then we are missing out on the greatest part of life called eternity in heaven.
